MEET THE FOUNDER OF CORPUS NATURALS

MEET THE FOUNDER

"Every aspect of the product – from its formula to its packaging to manufacturing is using renewable hydroelectric and solar energy."

After Jean-Pierre Mastey turned the famous 'Baxter of California from an outdated family business into a design-savvy company responsible for tapping influencers and selling to the cool kids, Jean-Pierre Mastey was more than ready to found CORPUS Naturals.

His very inspiring background with a much holistic approach to create his own brand combined with his no compromise attitude to natural personal care products, is why we at THE FIND were so excited to stock exclusively in the UK CORPUS Naturals.

After his deodorants are selling like butter and cream, we thought, our readers would be delighted to read more about Mr. Mastey in our latest interview.

Meet the founder of CORPUS

How would you describe your brand in one sentence?

CORPUS is for people that don't want to sacrifice for the sake of going natural.

How did your brand come about?

My motivation was personal. In 2015 I was expecting my first child and in the process of preparing our home, I went from someone who read ingredient panels to obsessing about the idea of clean and safe ingredients. All of the “natural” products I found were either not really natural, or felt like you were making a sacrifice on aesthetics, scent, texture or performance. I was prepared to do it better.

I have a lot of experience in the industry (I was the owner of Baxter of California for over 10 years before it was acquired by L’Oreal in 2013) and in the mid-2000’s we made several futile attempts on creating natural formulations and gave up since we just could not get it right. Move ahead just one decade later and natural ingredients + effectivity has been established. Science has delivered on the promise. The major ingredient suppliers have put serious effort into making safe and bio-based alternatives and that has made product formulation easier and effective. This is what made CORPUS possible and the time was right.

What is the biggest challenge you have faced as a brand?

I would not pinpoint one challenge. Corpus was approached in a very holistic way. Deodorant is something you use every day. But what elevates ordinary objects into extraordinary experiences is good design. A grocery store-bought deodorant may serve its intended function but we believe a good product should be both purposeful and elicit happiness. To be exceptional, the product must feel good - the weight, proportions and texture all must come together. Our goal was and is to be pleasing to all senses. There’s a difference between the products we love and the products we simply use. In order to pull this off it required meeting several challenges from design to formulating a new-age plant based formula.

What are you most proud of as a brand?

The brand has been very well received from media, wholesale partners, and most importantly customers. I would like to say all of the above make me and my very proud of what we have accomplished and continue to do.

What sets you apart from other brands in your category?

Corpus is different from other brands because we have pushed the bounds of what people have come to expect from natural products. Every detail is carefully considered. Even down to our green box which had to be custom made just for us to get that perfect tone of green. Our container and packaging is made in factories powered by hydroelectric energy and our fill is made with solar power. The industry is filled with “off the shelf,” white-label repurposed products that marketers whip into something special. There was nothing “off the shelf” when it comes to one of our most distinctive attributes: natural fragrances that meet the expectation of fine fragrance. Many brands are content with a single-note essential oil. We’ve built complex fragrances using resins, distillates, concretes, extracts etc., all without synthetics.

What is your best beauty hack?
I am sorry to say … I struggle with this one. It might be as simple as Dr. Bronner's castile soap that pretty much does it all.

What is your LITTLE FIND?
I'd go with the THE FIND Wool Dryer balls. We have been using these for a few years now. We discovered wool dryer balls when we decided to go as green as possible when my wife was pregnant with my daughter in 2015.

Now, let’s have a little fun and FIND out about you...
